Alexia Course from Transport for Wales talks in a new video about the successful rollout of their contactless Pay As You Go project, delivered by Unicard's Ticketing Hub.
TfW introduced the tap-in, tap-out technology at 95 railway stations in South Wales in November 2024. It is the UK’s first PAYG system on the heavy rail network outside London.
“We’ve had an excellent relationship working really closely with Unicard to deliver this new proposition for Wales."
In the video, TfW’s Chief Commercial Officer Alexia Course says more than 200,000 customers have now started tapping in and tapping out, and income levels from the scheme are nearing £1 million.
She says they are now considering expanding the scheme to other parts of Wales and to more TfW customers.
She adds: “We’ve had an excellent relationship working really closely with Unicard to deliver this new proposition for Wales.
“We’ve had really great feedback on the passenger and customer experience of using this new technology platform.
“This project is all about innovation, really, and TfW is really leading the way in innovating in the ticketing and retailing space across the rail market, and that is a testament to all the hard work that both the TfW team and the Unicard team have delivered over the last few years to bring this product to market and so that customers can enjoy it.”
