Ipswich Buses go live in record time with Unicard's CMS and HOPS managed service

September 2011

Ipswich Buses has successfully rolled out a new smart ticketing scheme across its entire fleet of 75 vehicles in just seven weeks from first order. The comprehensive solution born from a Ticketer and Unicard collaboration includes terminals by Ticketer, a brand new ITSO commercial card, a card management system designed specifically for Ipswich Buses and access to Unicard's managed HOPS service.

The scheme went live without a hitch over the last August Bank Holiday weekend and is already proving extremely popular with drivers and passengers alike.

Managing Director Malcolm Robson of Ipswich Buses states:
“We took the decision to go ‘Smart’ to improve our passenger offering and ticketing flexibility, and to ensure we could recover our enhanced BSOG grant.  We carried out exhaustive research on the various ticketing options available, and finally chose Ticketer because they offered an exciting solution which came well recommended by their customers.
They have not let us down - they have delivered all they promised, on time and on budget, whilst isolating us from the intricacies of deploying an ITSO solution.  From day one we have successfully been reading National Concession cards, as well as our own new card scheme of trips and passes, and at a very much higher speed than we expected.
We are delighted by the solution we now have, and looking forward to an exciting ticketing future.”

John Clarfelt, Managing Director of Ticketer, says:
“Ipswich Buses set us a tough timescale for implementation, but the rollout has gone extremely smoothly and precisely to time - for which sincere thanks are due to Ipswich Bus staff, whose support has been invaluable, as has that of Unicard, our partner on the HOPS provision, and ITSO, who have been extremely helpful throughout.
We see this as a long term partnership and, after some sleep, look forward to delivering Ipswich Buses a raft of additional and exciting new functionality.”

Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) award HOPS contract to Unicard

June 2011

Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) has embarked on its smart ticketing program by awarding a HOPS contract to Unicard against strong competition from other leading HOPS suppliers.

HCC has selected Unicard as partner for the provision of a HOPS managed service on the basis of its technical competence and commercial offering. This central transactional and security hub for on-bus ticket machines will play a key role in HCCs development of a fully smart ticketing scheme in partnership with Unicard.

Unicard will fulfill HCC's key requirements.

  • Collect, process and store all ITSO transaction data
  • Maintain HCC's existing ITSO card production workstations
  • Communicate with back office systems and hardware in the field from all major ETM manufacturers (HOPS to HOPS and POST 2 HOPS communication)
  • Provide standard reports on transaction data
  • Manage HCC ENCTS concession scheme including provision of reimbursement information
  • Manage HCC's other multi operator products including an online portal to retail these
  • Ensure the future commercial ticketing needs of its partners such as The University of Hertfordshire

A comprehensive and competitive offer, coupled with delivery within tight deadlines ensures this ambitious and internally funded project will progress successfully

Staffordshire County Council launch their dynamic "Your Staffordshire" youth card scheme with Unicard's online self-service portal to assist in capturing thousands of applications per week.

May 2011

Unicard's self-service registration portal has been configured to accept registrations for two youth travel concessions which allow young people between the age of 11 -15 and 16-19 to travel for just £1, every day of the year. The portal is integrated with Unicard's Card Management System (procured via the Centro framework ) which in turn automatically dispatches card requests to any card bureau for immediate production.

The portal launched and saw over 10,000 applications within the first weeks of activity; applications which would normally have been submitted on paper and resulted in time consuming manual data entry and photo scanning by SCC staff...the perfect "low touch" solution to processing applications!

The service was developed and delivered under very tight time constraints in collaboration with Staffordshire's infrastructure team which provided a web service to the Council internal database for confirmation of identity within DP guidelines. The cards will be fully smart enabled by August this year with encoding provided by Unicard.

The initiative has received national backing from the British Youth Council, which champions the rights of people under 25. It is calling on other authorities to follow Staffordshire’s lead.

(Updated July 2011) Dominic Davidson, Transport and Projects Manager says:
"Considering the scheme was only launched on 1st June, where we are now is a significant achievement.  This has only been made possible by the incredibly hard work put in by all concerned, to some very challenging timescales – and so we would like to say a very big thank you for working with us to make it happen."
Thanks Dom, it's been fun!
