Unicard was created in 2003 by members of the Schlumberger team responsible for implementing and integrating multi-application smart card schemes for local authorities, including the landmark implementation of the highly innovative EC-funded SmartCities project.
For the SmartCities project, the team led the consortium which designed and implemented a card scheme platform to meet specific core criteria:

Multi-application, multi-issuer functionality

End to end, open and dynamic architecture
- Flexible and distributed operation

A scheme which other sectors - transport, loyalty, and payment, for example - can join when the opportunity arises
Over the years of this project, the team built up a unique set of skills and software tools for implementing multi-application schemes. On completion, it was clear that the best way to build on this experience and deliver the skills and products to the wider commercial marketplace was through a dedicated organisation. Small and agile, this organisation would partner with other players involved in creating and delivering smart card schemes, as required by specific projects.
The result is Unicard, a uniquely qualified supplier of implementation services and products for smart card schemes.
